Owners David Ballard and Stephen Andrews did a sterling job to keep FCC afloat during the winter of 2009/10 that saw so many postponements.
Cash For Goals
Two days into February and everyone was hoping for Tuesday night action against our friends from Halstead Town, this being the rearranged game that was controversially called off at the last minute on Boxing Day. By 2.30pm that afternoon, the decision that was expected came when a local referee deemed the pitch to be waterlogged and to be honest, who of us was exactly surprised?
It was hardly the ideal start to the latest idea that was to be tried in an effort to raise much-needed funds for the club when the ‘Cash for Goals for February’ scheme was launched when a number of supporters pledged an amount per goal and extended this generosity by also pledging cash for clean sheets and wins whilst Tony Oswick - the much required ‘substitute scribe’ columnist in our Match- day Programme pledged to subtract £5 from his donation for every red card that FCC received during the month and Lee Peacock’s Dad pledged £10 for every goal that Lee scored in the month. It was very pleasing as to what people were prepared to donate once the idea had caught on. The main problem was it was very much doubtful there would be enough games in the month to make the scheme worthwhile.
Our first league match since the 28th December 2009 finally arrived on Saturday 6th February 2010, but alas, not at the Rush Green Bowl. A long trek was made to Swaffham Town and Cash for Goals received its first boost thanks to a 4-1 victory. This came courtesy of two goals from Kevin Coyle and one apiece for Matt Waters and Chris Ribchester with all four FCC goals coming after the hosts had taken an early lead. Meanwhile, for West Clacton, Sean Hillier attempted a comeback of 35 minutes in a bid to recover from his knee injury that proved to be unsuccessful and in turn side- lined him for a while longer.
Three days later, Tuesday night action made a return to the Bowl as we took on Saffron Walden Town once more in the First Division Knockout Cup. More on that one later...and as far as games go, that was your lot for February! Our number of matches in three months saw two in December, one in January and two in February. The club were now skating on the thinnest of thin ice and ‘Cash for Goals’ had taken a set-back, but at least we could carry that over into March. Postponed matches were announced on Saturday 13th February away at Stowmarket Town, Saturday 20th February against March Town United and yes, you have guessed right, it was a Saturday match due at the Bowl and yet another 70 programmes went into the bin and I was seriously wondering why I was bothering. Then our match at home to Long Melford scheduled for Tuesday 23 February
